IHEU calls for asylum for Pakistani atheist
Submitted by Matt on 17 November, 2011 - 20:51The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) is calling for Sweden to provide asylum to Khalid Saeed, a Pakistani atheist and apostate from Islam who fled his homeland to live in Sweden. Khalid’s initial request for asylum was rejected by Swedish authorities because they did not accept that his outspoken atheism had made it unsafe for him and his family in Pakistan.
Gay Humanists protest Russia's anti-gay legislation
Submitted by Matt on 14 November, 2011 - 17:08The Pink Triangle Trust (PTT), a member organization of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (HEU), is protesting anti-gay legislation proposed in Russia. The legal committee of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly has introduced a draft law prohibiting the so-called propaganda of 'sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism and transgenderism, and paedophilia to minors'.
Pope attacks atheism at Assisi inter-faith meeting; Italian freethinkers reply that “he has a bad conscience”

It was supposed to be a day of reflection and dialogue, but Benedict XVI, with four atheists in attendance at his invitation, turned the meeting into yet another attack against atheists.
IHEU protests Palestinian atheist persecution
Submitted by Matt on 18 November, 2010 - 18:13The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) is protesting the imprisonment of a Palestinian blogger for alleged atheism. Waleed Khalid Hasayin has reportedly been detained by Palestinian Authority security forces in the West Bank since October 31. The 26-year-old computer science graduate is accused of posting anti-religious writings on the Internet. He faces a possible sentence of life in prison as well as the threat of vigilante killing.
Swiss dubbed ‘school yard bullies’ for firing non-religious teacher
Submitted by Matt on 13 October, 2010 - 16:02The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) has accused Swiss authorities of behaving like “school yard bullies” towards a state school teacher who removed the crucifix from his classroom. Valentin Abgottspon was dismissed from his job as a middle-school teacher in the Swiss canton of Valais on Friday, 8 October. The dismissal came after the teacher raised concerns about the promotion of Christianity by state schools.

Every citizen has the right to participate in the affairs of government, to participate in peaceful activities and to influence the policies of government through civic organizations [1]. Every person shall have the right to freedom to assemble and to demonstrate together with others peacefully and unarmed and to petition.[2] No person shall prejudice the fundamental or other human rights and freedoms of others …no restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right beyond what is acceptable and demonstrably justifiable in a free and democratic society.[3]
Keep Iran out of the UN Human Rights Council

IHEU President Sonja Eggerickx today launched an international appeal to keep Iran out of the United Nations Human Rights Council. "Iran has one of the worst human rights records on earth," she said, "yet it has had the audacity to announce its candidacy for membership of the UN Human Rights Council. The international community must not let this happen. We are calling upon the world's non-governmental organisations to join us in our appeal to keep Iran out." IHEU has started a petition on this web site and is seeking signatures from other organizations.

Parliamentary questions precede first World Conference on Untouchability in London, June 9 & 10
Submitted by admin on 8 June, 2009 - 11:27The first "World Conference on Untouchability" has prompted questions in the House of Commons and the House of Lords about government policy towards the global human rights problem of caste discrimination, which afflicts almost 250 million people in countries from Japan to Nigeria. The questions were raised by Jeremy Corbyn, MP, and Lord Avebury. Both parliamentarians will speak at the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) conference, to be held at Conway Hall Humanist Centre, London, on June 9 and 10.
IHEU condemns child marriage and executions of children
Submitted by admin on 12 March, 2009 - 12:42IHEU has strongly condemned the execution of children in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen and Pakistan and the practice of child marriage. In a statement to the annual meeting on the Rights of the Child held at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, IHEU called the continuation of child marriage "a disgrace" and judicial killing of children "the ultimate barbarity".
