Every three years the Humanist world comes together in one place for the World Humanist Congress. Humanist activists from dozens of countries share experiences and discuss Humanist policy; they educate each other and learn new methods for organization and outreach; they are inspired by the stories and plans of Humanists from all over the world; and they form friendships that last through the decades. At the end of the congress they go back to their countries with the training, support and inspiration to grow their groups and change their societies.

But the activists who can benefit the most from a world congress need help from their fellow Humanists to take part. That’s why IHEU has a Congress Travel Fund to help pay some of the travel cost for delegates who could otherwise not participate.

Most participants from the developed world can afford to pay for themselves, and a few IHEU member organizations can pay the costs of their delegates. But many outstanding Humanist activists, especially from the developing world, cannot afford to participate unless we help them. Without support from their fellow Humanists, these activists will be unable to take part in our movement and the world congress will not truly represent our global diversity. Without the Congress Travel Fund, some of our newest groups in the most challenging circumstances will not receive the support and inspiration that could make the difference between success and failure.

IHEU is looking to increase the Congress Travel Fund for future Congresses. Thanks to a generous donation from the Norwegian Humanist association, more than 30 developing world participants can be brought to the 2011 World Humanist Congress in Oslo, Norway.
