As the world union of Humanist, rationalist, secular, ethical culture, atheist and freethought organizations, IHEU represents the Humanist movement at international forums. IHEU maintains delegations to the United Nations (UN) in New York and Geneva, UNESCO in Paris, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in the Gambia.

IHEU’s representatives are mostly dedicated volunteers, and it is remarkable how much IHEU achieves with very limited resources for international representation. Please consider donating to IHEU to support this vital work.

Through its international representatives, IHEU is able to promote Humanist values within the world community in many different ways. Activities include speaking at international forums, working with intergovernmental agencies, lobbying national governments and international representatives, and providing expertise and analysis on issues of concern to Humanists. In recent years, this work has required IHEU to publish detailed reports and hold symposia and conferences at the UN, as well as publicizing Humanist concerns to the international media.

IHEU also works with individual Humanists and Humanist groups to ensure that their complaints and concerns, for example about mistreatment by their government, can be addressed by the international system.

IHEU works in alliance with other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to amplify our voice on issues of mutual concern, and members of IHEU delegations have served in many prominent positions in the international NGO community. Wherever such opportunities arise, IHEU Representatives also help IHEU work with and collaborate on UN projects as well as projects of the other Intergovernmental Organizations, either directly or through IHEU’s member organizations.

International Objectives
The long-term objectives of IHEU’s representational programme are:

• To support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
• To promote freedom of religion and belief
• To promote secularism and the separation of religion and states
• To promote a humanist approach to social issues
• To promote the scientific method
